The Fotodiox Universal Gobo Image Projection Attachment

I am so thankful that this shoot with Grace Housewright was picked up by Fotodiox for a social feature on their channels. I met Grace at a runway show, and she is such a great model to work with. We had a lot of fun during this shoot, and it’s awesome when a collaboration gets featured by a brand on social media.

First off, I have a few Fotodiox products, and I really like them. Each one is really solidly built and a great value. You don’t always have to spend crazy amounts of money to get amazing results from photography gear. No matter you level of experience, these are great products you should definitely check them out here.

We had a great fashion portfolio session. At the end I asked her if she she had more time to test a few creative lighting set ups. I had just gotten the Fotodiox Universal Gobo, and I was excited to use it.

So excited in fact, this part of the shoot was totally unplanned, and I don’t have lighting diagrams for them. It did take some time to dial in the lights, and I roughly remember the set up. But that is photography some days, creativity free and in the moment.

The Equipment

This is a universal mount product. It comes in all the standard strobe mounting options. I of course got mine in the Alien Bees mount. The gobo shapes come two shapes to a blank, and I felt like the shapes provided cover a lot of needs you may have. The holder takes some getting used to… it’s really tight which is good for holding the shapes, but I struggled the first few times putting it in. The focus adjustment knob is simple to operate. Overall… this is a great product.

A few thoughts though…

  • One, this product is kinda like my Alien Bees Ringflash. It has a very particular usage and looks. I won’t use it all the time, but when I do it’s awesome!

  • I wish the shapes came one to a blank and there were more options available maybe as add on, or options.

  • The aluminum gobo shapes get hot over time if you have your modeling lamp on. Be aware!

The Set Ups

Rose Song Red

The “Rose Song Red” set-up with Grace Housewright was a three light set up.

The Key light was an Alien Bees B800 in almost a split light position with a 45° grid from another Fotodiox product, the Universal Bardoor Kit to light her face.

Then I used another Alien Bees B800 as the fill light with a 7° reflector and a red gel to create the color.

Lastly, I used an Alien Bees B800 with the Fotodiox Universal Gobo to create the heart shape.

The biggest thing I learned is that you have to use A LOT more power than what you think with the GOBO.

Deja Vu Blue

The “Deja Vu Blue” set-up with Grace Housewright was a four light set up.

The key light was again an Alien Bees B800 in almost a split light position with a 45° grid from another Fotodiox product, the Universal Bardoor Kit to light her face.

But this time the fill lights were in a flat light position at 45° angles to the subjuct with Blue and Teal gels to create the color interest.

Lastly, the the Fotodiox Universal Gobo was feathered at the background only to create more texture and interest.

You may have figured it out, or you might be like me and had no idea. I was told during the stories on social media that she looked like singer/actress Olivia Rodrigo. So, I used some of her song titles to title these images.

This was a great shoot, and I can not wait to shoot with the Fotodiox Universal Gobo again, or Grace Housewright.
